BURIAL RECORDS OF PORTLAND’S
EASTERN CEMETERY, 1717–1962
WILLIAM B. JORDAN, COMPILER
The first systematic survey of the plots in Portland’s Eastern Cemetery was completed by William Augustus Godwin. In 1962 William B. Jordan brought that compilation up to date. Eastern Cemetery is Portland’s oldest burial ground. It is believed that burials were made there in the 1600s, but no markers survive from that period. Record-keeping was also lax in the 1700s, so it was not until the Godwin survey that accurate records were made. In this large collection of about 7,000 records, each entry gives the person’s full name, death date, and burial location. Other data, such as age, relationships, military service, race and religion are given when known. It is a useful accounting for genealogists. Paperback 194 Pages
